Childrens Events

04 August 2010

Their enthusiasm, non judgemental attitude, ability to get stuck into things, all delightful traits that make it so rewarding. BUT………

In a culture of ‘blame’ that we now belong to, there is also a side that you must consider for any event where children are concerned.

Firstly, because they ‘get stuck in’ you’ll need to ensure that there is more than adequate first aid at the event. Depending on the number of children there will need to be several people with first aid experience to look after the trips and falls. Staff need to show you these certificates; you can’t take it for granted that they are still up to date.

Also, have all the staff been CRB checked. Another immensely important factor and one you MUST adhere to. Not only is that piece of mind for you as the organiser, but it will give the parents piece of mind as well.

Consider toilets. Children have this habit of going to the loo a lot more than adults so you need to make provision for this. Also, ensure there is enough loo roll as well, you may want to appoint a toilet roll monitor. Sounds trivial but someone needs to be in control of these things!!

Refreshments. Since ‘Jamie Oliver’ and school dinners became higher on our radar, children’s refreshments can be something to look at in a lot more detail. Allergies are a big concern here so make sure that the catering is done by a reputable company.

Next of Kin. Before children are allowed at the event, it is important when their parents aren’t around that you have all their contact details. Obtaining this in advance could save you a lot of time at the event and offer peace of mind to all concerned.

Children are great fun, enjoy your event, but you’ll need to regress to your childhood to think like they will, become on their level but above all, enjoy it!
